MacEmulate Frequently Asked Questions

Will it work with my host system?

MacEmulate will work on any computer that can accept one of the supported terminal types (Wyse, TeleVideo, Hazeltine, etc.). It does not matter what type of computer or operating system you have. MacEmulate just takes the place of a real terminal. It has been used with a wide variety of operating systems including Unix, Linux, Xenix, PICK, SuperDOS, Alpha Micro, Basic 4, IRIS, HP, and many others.

Will it work with my Macintosh?

MacEmulate works on any Macintosh capable of running Mac OSX 10.2 or higher. An older version of MacEmulate (4.0) is available to run on all Macs made since the MacPlus (1986), and works with all MacOS versions from 7.0 to 9.2.

How do I make the connection?

Most companies currently use a network connection to access the host computer through what is known as a Telnet, TCP/IP connection. This will allow you to connect over the company network and even the Internet if the host computer is set up to do so. MacEmulate supports this type of connection, and no extra hardware or software is required. You can also use an internal modem if your Macintosh is eqipped with one.

If you wish to connect through a direct serial cable to the host computer, or an external modem, then you will need a USB-to-serial adapator, since Macintosh computers no longer come equipped with built-in serial ports. You might also need an adaptor to convert from the 9-pin PC-style serial connector on the USB-to-serial adapator to the host computer's RS232 25-pin connection. This lets you connect to any cable coming from the host computer that can be used by a terminal. What you need will depend on the USB-to-serial adapator you purchase and the requirements of the host computer. If you have an older Mac that has built-in serial ports, then all you need is the standard Macintosh modem cable and a gender changer. To connect to an external modem, you use the same cable without the gender changer.

How does it work?

MacEmulate is a software application that makes the Mac imitate the functions of a terminal. No other software or hardware is required (except cabling if you use a serial connection). You start MacEmulate as you would any application, and it brings up a window that does everything a real terminal can do, and more. It's that simple!

Why should I use MacEmulate instead of a terminal?

MacEmulate let's your Mac double as a terminal. It makes sense to use one piece of equipment to do multiple tasks. MacEmulate can save you the costs of buying, repairing and replacing terminals and can free up your desk space. Some of our satisfied users say they plan to use MacEmulate on every Macintosh they own.
